🦌 Oak Bay needs your yard for deer contraception

5 min · about one cup of tea · from the desk

Good morning, Oak Bay.

The District would like a word about your yard, and the deer in it.

Oak Bay's immuno-contraceptive program returns this fall, and it only works if residents let the vaccination teams onto private property. Crews from HERD Wildlife Management work early September through the end of October, between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. The consent form is at oakbay.ca/deer.

Also inside: the U15 Reds came home from West Kelowna undefeated, the bugs are being counted at Uplands Park all weekend, and there is a free jam at Ship Point this afternoon before the harbour fills up for David Foster.

This Weekend

🎹

David Foster and Friends, free in the Inner Harbour tonight. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.; public viewing is first-come, first-served. Road closures are in place around Belleville and Government, so arrive early and leave the car well back.

✈️

Snowbirds and CF-18s open the show about 7:30 tonight. They pass over the Inner Harbour no lower than 500 feet, and Tuesday's flyby suggested you do not need to fight the crowds to see it.

🎸

A free community jam at Ship Point, today from 3 to 7 p.m. Musicians of every background and skill level are invited to the first one. Bring an instrument or just stop by on the way downtown.

🌳

The Uplands Park insect BioBlitz runs today and Sunday. Friends of Uplands Park are cataloguing everything with six legs, and they take all the eyes they can get. Bring a magnifying glass.

🎶

Monterey Open Mic closes its summer run August 30. The 1:30 set at Monterey Recreation Centre gets a featured artist. Worth putting in the calendar now.

The deer contraception program is back this fall, and the District needs your yard. Vaccination teams work early September to the end of October, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., in partnership with HERD Wildlife Management. In the 2019 to 2021 trial, 120 does were vaccinated and the fawning rate fell 65 per cent. Consent forms are at oakbay.ca/deer. [Oak Bay News]

The U15AA Carnarvon/Gordon Head Reds are provincial champions. They went 6-0 in West Kelowna, beating Richmond 13-1 in the semifinal and Township 7-4 in the final. Jamie Davidson hit seven home runs over the tournament. Next stop is the Western Canadians in Prince Albert, August 14 to 16. [Oak Bay News]

Track repairs near Oak Bay High run into next week. The storm main work that started July 23 is still going, and part of the public track stays closed while crews finish. [District of Oak Bay]

An Ontario visitor got a $230 ticket for smoking cannabis in a parked car. Oak Bay Police issued it this week, a reminder that the parked-vehicle rule catches people who assume a stationary car counts as private. [Victoria Buzz]

A strong wind warning is up for Haro Strait. Environment Canada issued it at 4 p.m. Friday, with southwest winds of 20 to 25 knots over southern sections by Saturday afternoon. Worth a look before you take a boat out. [Environment Canada]

“Aside from a bruised ego, this one seems to be doing just fine. Taking five on the front lawn. Side note: I have no idea where they picked up their new green hat, but they've been wearing it for weeks throughout OB.”

Look closely: that is not a hat. It is garden netting caught in his antlers, and it has been there for weeks. That is what a loose net does when a deer walks through it, so if you have one over a bed or a berry bush, it is worth pulling it tight or taking it down.

ONE MORE THING

If you do let the vaccination teams in this fall, the window runs early September to the end of October, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. For two months the deer eating your garden will be the only ones in Oak Bay with an appointment.
