Good morning, Oak Bay. Just after 3:30 on the afternoon of Sept. 1, Sgt. Steven Twardy stood beside his pickup on Beach Drive with a laser gun, reading speeds off cars 500 metres away. The fastest driver his department has caught on that road this year was doing 114. The limit is 40. The number that didn't make the headline is 46. That's how many speeding tickets and warnings police have issued on Beach Drive so far this year. By the same date last year, 123. The year before, 82. The reports don't say why. Beach Drive is the prettiest 10 kilometres in the district, and the district itself says the open design invites speed. Further down the page, the waterslides are closed, some Grade 12s want to wash your car, and the chip bags under your sink finally have a legal home.
