| | PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT | To join the conversation, become a member of the Oak Bay Local Facebook group. | Oak Bay in the 1940s | A local posted a barely recognizable photo of Oak Bay in the 1940s, and challenged the group to guess where the shot was taken. While some quickly guessed correctly that it was taken on the corner of St. Patrick and Central, others took a trip down memory lane and reminisced about the stores and buildings that are still there. Others discussed the notable absence of the old Caseyβs building, which many said they really miss, and some still refer to the area as Caseyβs Corner. Someone also noted there were far fewer trees in the old photo than there are today (judging by a 2023 Google screen capture). | Another local commented that the area has been their home for 27 happy years, and others brought up buildings that have come and gone from the area. One such place was Bolandβs Bakery, which apparently had βthe best chocolate cakeβ. Someone also remarked on how little the community has visibly changed in over 80 years, though that is certainly up for debate. | | | How to neutralize a wasp sting | Over 70 comments were made in response to an Oak Bay local who accidentally grabbed a wasp in a remote area and was looking for advice on how to neutralize the pain. Locals reached out, advising first and foremost to ensure the stinger was pulled out. In addition to ibuprofen and Benadryl to reduce the inflammation, several suggested rubbing a raw onion on it, which many swore worked. The original commenter noted that the group was βbetter than Googleβ and took the onion advice, which worked not only once, but twice. They unfortunately had to use this natural remedy less than 48 hours after the original post was made, noting that the onion βold wives taleβ will now be their first response to a wasp sting. Maybe someone also has advice on natural wasp repellent, too! | |

The classes have taken place every Tuesday night in the grassy field near Willows Beach Park. They shared that they are grateful to the various instructors from Oak Bay Rec and other studios, and to the person who ensures that all goes well, including putting up the sound system and doing a walkabout to ensure attendees can all hear the instructions. The photo above was taken at the second-last class of the summer, where locals estimated that there were around 200 attendees. The last session of the summer is coming up this week!
