| | PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT | To join the conversation, become a member of the Oak Bay Local Facebook group | Unsafe swimming at Willows Beach | Several people in the community have been wondering if itβs safe to swim at Willows Beach, considering an advisory was issued Sept. 1, which advised locals not to swim due to high levels of bacteria. Though the advisory is not a ban from swimming, many remain wary and looked to the community for help in making sure their decision to swim was a safe one. Most recently, some locals reported that the sign was still up at the site, but the Oak Bay municipality remained mum on possible reasons why the bacteria levels have been up. While there is no official word, locals speculated that it could be due to old infrastructure, geese, or higher than normal temperatures. | Another local posted a recently issued stormwater quality report from the CRD, which determined that the number of high-rated discharges in several areas continued to decrease in 2022, including in Oak Bay. | |

| | | Applying for co-op housing | One Oak Bay local reached out to the group for suggestions or tips on how to apply for co-op housing as a single parent. The poster is also looking to become a foster parent. Several locals chimed in to share their experiences with applications and waitlists, with one saying that they had been on a waitlist so long that their child had aged out of the nearby schools. | Others offered helpful suggestions, including keeping copies of the forms at home and labelling them every six months (which is the length of time between submitting applications with many co-op housing units). Another suggestion was to consider looking into subsidized housing, which has been a quicker process for some applicants. Others suggested focusing on how they can ensure they meet all of the requirements listed for the units, and including as many details as possible on how you can contribute to the community or be a good neighbour. CHF has some information that can aid in the search, including a tool that can list units in Oak Bay and other communities in BC Pacifica, CRD, and BC Housing. | |
