COMMUNITY EVENTS | βοΈ Oak Bay-Gordon Head All-Candidates Meeting is taking place on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 2:30pm at the Monterey Recreation Centre (Garry Oak Room). Oak Bay-Gordon Head will be one of the most hotly contested local races in the fall 2024 provincial election. To assist Oak Bay residents to make their choice between the candidates, the Community Association of Oak Bay is hosting an all-candidates meeting, which will be moderated by Paul Haysom from CHEK News. Known for their high energy performances, this band will have you singing and dancing along to classic popular Soul, Motown and R&B tunes. | πCozy story time at Emily Carr House on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 11am. The Greater Victoria Public Library will hold an Emily Carr themed story time for kids who will also get to sing songs, and make a craft. | | COMMUNITY NEWS | π¨ A person riding a bike was hit on Beach Drive after a driver failed to yield to them. The driver was fined after Oak Bay police responded to the collision at about 6pm on Sept. 24 in the area of Beach Drive and Ripon Road. Officers determined that the driver of the vehicle stopped at the stop sign on Ripon Road, but failed to yield to the bike rider on Beach Drive. Fortunately their injuries werenβt severe, however, deputy chief Kris Rice warned drivers to be vigilant, especially at intersections. The group seeks signatures as part of Nature Canadaβs initiative to help get natural parks in urban cities, saying the implications directly or indirectly for the revitalization of Bowker Creek canβt be underestimated. [Oak Bay Climate Force] | π Spot the window poems in Oak Bay. Oak Bay Arts and Culture Days will feature window poems at various locations through to Oct. 13. Residents can stroll through Oak Bay reflecting on the creations of local poets displayed in windows. Locations which will feature poems include Ivy's Book Shop, Oak Bay Recreation Centre, Monterey Recreation Centre, Henderson Recreation Centre, Neighbourhood Learning Centre and more. The question spurred over 80 comments, at last count, which didnβt glean much advice about appraisals, however there were a range of useful suggestions for those who may be facing a similar situation. | Suggestions ranged from local contacts with connections in remote Indigenous communities who have benefited from these kinds of donations in the past. Another suggestion pointed to a company that turns vintage furs into teddy bears, which even use lining and monograms for the feet, which some find to be a way to make use of vintage fur coats. According to the original poster, an elderly woman was struggling to lift her walker onto the sidewalk, Sam saw this and ran across the street to help her, according to the witness, who saw the situation unfold, but was not in a position to help. | Dozens of commenters reached out to thank Sam for being a champ, and others said that they hope they see more shared stories like this from members of the community in the future.
