Next Saturday, Oct.19 is voting day, which often leads to an outdoor wait. To avoid lineups at the ballot box, voters can go to any of the eight district electoral offices in the CRD. The District of Oak Bay has been working with the Capital Regional Hospital District, which owns the 1.6-hectare property on Cadboro Bay Road since 2021. [Times Colonist] | 🚨 Man faces multiple weapons charges after late night disturbance in Oak Bay. Police say they received a call about a man screaming loudly for 15 minutes on Cadboro Bay. He was arrested for disturbance and refusing to identify himself to police, and upon searching him, OBPD say they found an axe and a knife in his possession. He was later identified and found to be on probation, which prohibits him from possessing such weapons. He received charges for four offences total. | | PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT | To join the conversation, become a member of the Oak Bay Local Facebook Group | | Rules of the road? | An Oak Bay local posted a letter from Victoria News with the title Greater Victoria cyclists not following rules of the road, which argued that cyclists should follow the same rules as car drivers, and be fined the same amount if they break those rules. The letter had a lot of other suggestions as well, including fines for not utilizing bike lanes, not wearing bright clothing or helmets, making ‘California stops’ and for not obeying 40 km/h speed limits. The writer also suggested bike shops should also play a role in ensuring cyclists comply, and that their bottom lines could also benefit from the increase in bike bell and helmet sales as well. | The problem with this letter, as some commenters suggested, is the disproportionate harm a vehicle can cause to a person riding a bicycle. As commenter, Alec, said “a car has the potential to be a weapon and a bike does not… obviously everyone needs to follow the law but angry drivers can kill a cyclist in an instant- the inverse is far less likely.” | Others went on to suggest that bicycles should be “confiscated” if their riders don’t follow the rules, which sparked a discussion as to whether the same could be done for car drivers who don’t follow the rules. Regardless of where you stand, a lot of commenters said they see both vehicle drivers and bicycle riders driving recklessly around town. Do you agree? | | |
