| | IN THE NEWS | π οΈ Province orders Oak Bay to make changes to bylaws to build more housing Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon says Oak Bay has not come close to reaching its housing goals, and is on track to fall short again by the end of the year. In 2023, Oak Bay had a target of 56 homes but only built 16. It must have 665 new homes built by 2028, and the province says the municipality must change some bylaws, including the one about how many parking spots are needed per unit. [Capital Daily] | π¨ Oak Bay police respond to 68 calls, including a child hit on a bike Last Wednesday, a vehicle and a bicycle collided on Landsdowne, near Foul Bay. The childβwho was wearing a helmetβwas taken to the hospital but appeared to be OK. The driver is cooperating in the ongoing investigation. OB police also pulled over two drivers suspected of impaired driving, one on May 12, the other on May 18, and a May 13 roadblock stopped 60 vehicles, with none of the drivers found to be impaired. [CHEK] | ποΈ Motorcyclist clocked at 145km/h in Beach Dr. 40km/h zone On May 12, the driver of the bike, a 19-year-old, was spotted at Beach and Newport doing almost four times the allowed speed limit and was issued a speeding ticket. Their bike was impounded for seven days, too. Six days later, just down Beach, a driver, 18, was caught doing 98 km/hr, more than twice the limit. They also got pinched for not displaying an βNβ decal to signify theyβre a new driver, and their vehicle was impounded for a week. [Oak Bay Police] | π Expect road closures for Sundayβs Oak Bay Half Marathon For the 19th time, Oak Bay will be a sea of runners and walkers this Sunday as the OB Half Marathon, Relay, 10K, and Dairyland Kids 1K take place. The half-marathon is slated to start at 8am at Windsor Park and conclude by noon. Except Newport at Oak Bay, which will be closed for less than an hour, look for most streets to be shut down for one to three hours. The start/end of the race is at Windsor between Transit and St. David, and will be closed from 6am to 12pm. [Black Press] | ποΈ Oak Bay Pool to close from June 2 to June 22 for maintenance Itβs the annual cleanup period for the rec centre, so it will be off-limits for three weeks next month. Itβs slated to reopen June 23 at 6am. Valid OB Rec memberships wil be accepted at other regional rec centre pools: Commonwealth, Gordon Head, Panorama, Esquimalt, Crystal, Juan de Fuca, and SEAPARC.
